Softball Splits with UAlbany on Saturday

BALTIMORE  – Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) combined to strikeout 25 batters, walk none and allow just two earned runs as the UMBC Softball team (16-5, 1-1 AE) opened America East play with a split against UAlbany (10-10, 1-1 AE).

The Great Danes took the first game, 3-2, before the Retrievers took the night cap, 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 1:
  • UMBC put runners on multiple times in the first few innings, but couldn't score
  • Coppersmith got the first 13 batters of the game, but a 1-out solo homer in the 5th put UAlbany up 1-0
  • The Great Danes added to the lead in the 7th with a solo homer and a run on a two-out error.
  • The Retrievers got two back in the bottom of the seventh on a two-RBI single from Coppersmith with one out, but the tying run was stranded.
  • UMBC out-hit the Great Danes 7-3 in the game, but left seven on base. Coppersmith struck out 16, walked none, and had two hits herself at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 2:
  • UAlbany jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after a bunt single, a triple and a passed ball
  • UMBC responded in the bottom of the first after singles from Coppersmith and Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) sandwiched around an error loaded the bases.
  • Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) then ripped a two-run single up the middle to tie the game
  • Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) would draw a bases-loaded walk two batters later to give UMBC a 3-2 lead.
  • Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) would then add an RBI single with two-outs in the first to make it 4-2 Retrievers.
  • A pair of errors allowed an unearned run to score for the visitors in the top of the second to make it a 4-3 ball game.
  • It would remain 4-3 until the fourth when Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) hit a leadoff triple and then scored on a Turner RBI groundout.
  • In the fifth, Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) had a leadoff single, moved to second on a ground out, advanced to third on awild pitch and scored on an error to make it 6-3
  • Matter retired the final 10 batters of the game to improve to 9-1 on the season

The teams will play a rubber match tomorrow at noon at The Diamond
