Burlington – UMBC ran into some hot goalkeeping early and defending America East champion Vermont went on to defeat the Retrievers, 12-3, at Virtue Field.
UMBC (2-5, 0-2 America East) dropped its third consecutive game, all on the road, while Vermont won its third straight home game and improved to 5-6, 2-0.
The Retrievers outshot Vermont, 15-7, in the first 15 minutes, but UVM goalkeeper Ryan Cornell made seven saves without allowing a score.
