Courtney Coppersmith and Kya Matter were named America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week

Coppersmith and Matter Earn America East Weekly Honors; Softball Visits Towson on Wednesday

For the third time this season, both Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) earned America East weekly honors. Coppersmith won her third America East Pitcher of the Week award, while Matter took home her fifth Rookie of the Week honor.

UMBC will head to cross-town rival Towson for a single game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. 

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • UMBC (23-7, 8-3 AE) took four of five games last week against Stony Brook and at Maine
  • The Retrievers swept a doubleheader at home against the Seawolves, before taking two of three up in chilly Bangor.
  • Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) paces the offense with a .380 average and 35 hits
  • Coppersmith is hitting .356 with 3 homers and 17 RBI
  • Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) is batting .414 with two homers and eight RBI in America East play
  • Matter is 13-2 with a 0.98 ERA in the circle, while Coppersmith is 5-2, Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) is 3-1 and Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) is 2-2.

Scouting the Tigers:
  • Towson (13-25, 3-9 CAA) dropped three of four games last weekend, including two of three at home against CAA foe Delaware
  • Julia Jackson has been the workhorse of the Towson pitching staff, throwing 127.1 innings on the mound for the Tigers.  The senior out of Simi Valley, California is 10-11 with a 4.40 ERA, pitching 13 complete games and throwing 69 strikeouts on the year. The CAA Pitcher of the Week on March 15, Jackson earned a complete game shutout vs. UNCW on April 10, the team's first shutout of the season.  It was also Jackson's first pitched shutout of her Towson career.
  • Hitting .400 in a 3-1 week for Towson, Chloe Poulich was selected as the CAA Player of the Week on March 21.  She is the first Towson player to earn CAA Player of the Week since April 2018. The senior had a pair of multi-hit games during the week, going 3-for-4 with an RBI double vs. Villanova and 2-for-4 with an RBI vs. Quinnipiac, also hitting a home run against Lafayette. 
  • Towson's mainstay in the second spot of the lineup, Briana Ramirez stands third in the CAA with a .387 batting average.  She has notched 46 hits, fourth in the CAA, off 119 at-bats. Ramirez has hit safely in 30 of 36 games played and has hit safely in 12 of her last 13 games.  She has a career batting average of .329 at Towson.
