Box Score Orono, Maine – UMBC saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, as host Maine defeated the Retrievers, 8-3, in the finale of the three-game set at Kessock Field.
UMBC (23-7, 8-3) has taken each of their first four America East series, after taking both ends of Saturday's doubleheader.
Sophomore Ashley DellaGuardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) homered and doubled to drive in both of the Retriever runs.
The Black Bears scored four times in the first inning to take command. Two of the four runs charged to
Kya Matter were unearned.
Both of DellaGuardia's run-scoring hits occurred with two outs. In the top of the second inning, she ripped a liner over the left field fence for her second home run of the week. Two innings, later, the first baseman hit a hard grounder just inside the bag at third to score pinch runner
Julia Colton from second base. Colton was running for
Logan Hawker, who had doubled with one away.
That closed the gap to 4-2, but Maine added another pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning.
Madie Leach relieved Matter and fanned a batter with the bases loaded to prevent further damage. But the Black Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sierra Pierce drove in a run with a double to the left-center field gap, but
Courtney Coppersmith was cut down at the plate for the game's final out.
Hawker collected a pair of base hits in the game.
UMBC is slated to play at Towson on Wednesday.
