Softball Travels to Maine for Weekend Series

The UMBC Softball team returns to the road when it travels to Maine for a three-game America East series this weekend.

The action begins with a 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday, followed by an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday

Scouting the Retrievers
  • Pitcher/outfielder Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) homered at the plate in game one, and then became the UMBC All-Time Strikeout Leader in the second game as UMBC (21-6, 6-2 AE) swept a doubleheader against visiting Stony Brook on Wednesday
  • Her three-run homer in the third inning of game one put the Retrievers up for good in a 5-1 win, before she pitched a 10-strikout complete game shutout in a 3-0 win in the second game. The games were a rematch of the 2019 and 2021 America East Championships, both won by UMBC.
  • In the bottom of the sixth of game one, Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) beat out an infield single to start the inning, and then stole second. Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) then fell behind 0-2 in the count, but worked the count full before smashing her first career homer to left to push the lead to 5-1.
  • Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) improved to 12-1 on the season. She struck out 11, walked two and allowed just four hits.
  • In game two, Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) began the bottom of the first beating out an infield single and moving to second on a throwing error. She moved to third on Coppersmith's one-out single up the middle, and then scored on a Pierce single.
  • Della Guardia reached on an error to start the second and then scored on an Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) no-doubt homer to left-center to make it 3-0.
  • Coppersmith finished the game with 10 strikeouts, and allowed two walks and just three hits (one infield single and two bunt singles)
Scouting the Black Bears
  • Maine (5-27, 1-4 AE) dropped its home opener, a mid-week America East matchup against UMass Lowell, on Wednesdayby a score of 7-2.
  • UML went up 1-0 in the first, but the Black Bears scored one run in the bottom of the second when Izzy Nieblas doubled to center field to tie the game
  • UMass Lowell regained the lead with a three-run opposite field home run and then added a single run in each the fourth, fifth, and seventh inning.
  • The Black Bears scored one in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.
  • Emily Reid (2-8), Alexandra Gruitch, and Caitlin Fallon both appeared in the game. They allowed seven earned and struck out five as a unit.
  • Kennedy Priest, Grace McGouldrick, Jasmine Gray, Izzy Nieblas, and Keely Clark all recorded a hit.
