Softball Hosts Stony Brook for Wednesday Doubleheader

The UMBC Softball team returns home to The Diamond on Wednesday when it host a noon America East doubleheader against Stony Brook.

The doubleheader is a rematch of the 2019 and 2021 America East Championship games, and it will be the final time these two teams play in Baltimore as conference foes as SBU is moving to the CAA next season. 

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • UMBC (19-6, 4-2 AE) enters play after taking two of three at Hartford last weekend
  • Sophomore Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) went a combined 4-for-6 with four RBI, a walk and two runs scored in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday (3-1, 11-3 F/6)
  • Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.), Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) had RBI in the first game
  • Coppersmith went 2-for-4 at the plate in game 1, Della Guardia added a single and a walk and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) also singled
  • Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) pitched all seven innings, striking out seven, walking none and allowing just four hits to improve to 11-1 on the season.
  • Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.), Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) and Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) all homered in game 2 for the Retrievers
  • Pierce and Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) also had RBI
  • Madie Leach (Eire, Colo) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to improve to 2-2 on the season.


Scouting the Seawolves:
  • Stony Brook (20-10, 1-1 AE) played three non-conference games last week and won all three via shutout.
  • Dawn Bodrug was named the America East Pitcher of the Week after striking out 33 and allowing just 1 hit in two wins
  • Catcher Corinne Badger is having a breakout season with 13 homers, 34 RBI and a .370 average.
