Della Guardia's Big Day Leads Softball to Sunday Sweep at Hartford

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Game 1 | Game 2

WEST HARTFORD, CONN -- Sophomore Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) went a combined 4-for-6 with four RBI, a walk and two runs scored to lead the UMBC Softball team to a series victory at Hartford with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday.

The Retrievers rallied late for a 3-1 win in the first game before the bats exploded for an 11-3 win in six innings in game two.

How it Happened in Game One:
  • After being held scoreless in Saturday's game and for the first four innings in Sundays first game, UMBC (19-6, 4-2 AE) finally broke through in the fifth
  • Hartford used a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to go up 1-0, but the Retrievers responded right away after Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) hit a leadoff double in the second, Jaedyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) followed with a bloop single and Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale) used an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at 1.
  • Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in McKeon and give UMBC at 2-1 lead
  • The Hawks got a runner on in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out bunt single, but Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) got a fly out to right and then Keating picked off the runner at first to end the threat
  • Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) started the seventh with a pinch-hit single and Granzow came in to pinch run.
  • Granzow moved to second on a Keating fly out and then scored on a two-out double off the bat of Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) to make it 3-1
  • Matter retired Hartford in order in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 11-1 on the season.
  • Coppersmith went 2-for-4 at the plate, Della Guardia added a single and a walk and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) also singled
  • Matter pitched all seven innings, striking out seven, walking none and allowing just four hits.
How it Happened in Game Two:
  • The Retrievers used a two-out rally to jump out to an early lead in the first inning.
  • Pierce ripped a two-out double to score Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) from first and put UMBC up 1-0
  • A passed ball allowed Pierce to move to third and she scored when Della Guardia beat out an infield single to make it 2-0
  • Wilson then crushed a two-run homer to make it 4-0
  • Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) opened the second with a solo homer to extend the lead to 5-0
  • The Retrievers loaded the bases with one out, forcing a pitching change, and Della Guardia greeted the new pitcher with a bases-clearing, three-RBI, double to make it 8-0
  • UMBC loaded the bases again in the second and an RBI groundout from Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) made it 9-0, before Dempsey came to the plate for a second time in the inning and hit an RBI single to make it 10-0
  • Coppersmith pitched a perfect first two innings, striking out four, before Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) worked two scoreless frames herself
  • Hartford scored three runs with two-outs in the fifth to extend the game, but Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth to make it 11-3, and then pitched a perfect bottom of the sixth to end the game via run-rule
  • Leach picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-2 on the season

UMBC returns to home to The Diamond to host Stony Brook for a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch for the rematch of the last two America East title games is 12 p.m.
