Game 1 |
Game 2Ā
BALTIMORE - Pitcher/outfielder
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) homered at the plate in game one, and then became the UMBC All-Time Strikeout Leader in the second game as the UMBC Softball team swept a doubleheader againstĀ visiting Stony Brook on Wednesday. Her three-run homer in the third inning of game one put the Retrievers up for good in a 5-1 win, before she pitched a 10-strikout complete game shutout in a 3-0 win in the second game. The games were a rematch of the 2019 and 2021 America East Championships, both won by UMBC.
How it Happened in Game 1:
- Stony Brook (20-12, 1-3 AE) got on the board first in the second inning to go up 1-0
- With two outs in the bottom of the third, Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) laid down a beautiful bunt single and that was followed by Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) drawing a full-count walk to put two on. Coppersmith then blasted the first pitch she saw over the right field fence to put the UMBC (21-6, 6-2 AE) up 3-1.
- A pair of errors and a single loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) got a strikeout to escape the threat.Ā
- The Seawolves again threatened in the sixth after the first two batters of the inning walked, but Matter got a popped up bunt, a flyout and a strikeout to once again avert any damage.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) beat out an infield single to start the inning, and then stole second. Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) then fell behind 0-2 in the count, but worked the count full before smashing her first career homer to left to push the lead to 5-1.
- Matter worked a perfect top of the seventh to secure the win and improve to 12-1 on the season. She struck out 11, walked two and allowed just four hits.
How it Happened in Game 2:
- Stony Brook got the first runner of the game on after a slow hit ball to first that the runner just beat out, but she was then thrown out by Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) trying to steal second
- Keating began the bottom of the first beating out an infield single and moving to second on a throwing error. She moved to third on Coppersmith's one-out single up the middle, and then scored on a Pierce single.Ā
- Coppersmith then struck out the side in the second, before Della Guardia reached on an error to start the second and then scored on a Lonchar no-doubt homer to left-center to make it 3-0
- The Seawolves then began attempting to bunt nearly every at-bat to reach base, but Coppersmith induced a couple bunt pop-ups around a bunt single to end the inning
- With one out in the top of the fourth, Coppersmith recorded her 775th career strike out to move into sole possession of first on the UMBC All-Time list
- Coppersmith finished the game with 10 strikeouts, and allowed two walks and just three hits (one infield single and two bunt singles).
