Softball Completes Weekend Sweep With 3-0 Victory Over St.John's

BALTIMORE -- Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) broke a scoreless fifth inning tie with a two-out RBI double, then pitched the final two frames to pick up the save, as the UMBC Softball team finished an undefeated weekend with a 3-0 win over St.John's.

Freshman pitcher Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) threw five scoreless innings, striking out 11, allowing two hits and issuing just a single intentional walk as she moved to 4-1 on the season. Coppersmith fanned four and walked one in the final two innings to pick up her second save in as many days.

Senior Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) put the game away with a two-out two-RBI double to right center in the sixth. Coppersmith was the only player with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3.

UMBC (7-4) has now won five in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team could get much going until the top of the fourth when St.John's slapped an infield single to lead off the inning. The runner moved to second on a two-out error, but Matter got a strikeout to end the threat
  • The Red Storm would hit a leadoff double in the fifth, but Matter would strike out the next two. The Retrievers would then issue an intentional walk to the Johnnies best hitter before Matter picked up her 11th and final strikeout of the game on three pitches
  • Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) would start the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side.
  • After a strikeout, Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) beat out a double play to keep the inning alive.
  • Jaedyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) then fouled off four straight pitches before ripping a single to left to put two on with two outs
  • Coppersmith then smacked a 1-2 pitch to left for a double to score pinch runner Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) and make it 1-0
  • After Coppersmith entered and pitched a scoreless top of the sixth, UMBC would put the game away in the bottom half of the inning
  • Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) had a one-out single and would move to second on a groundout
  • The inning was kept alive on an error that put Pierce at third and Hawker at first
  • Keating then sent a 2-1 pitch to right-center to score both runners and make it 3-0
  • Coppersmith struckout the first two batters in the seventh before Julia Colton (Elkridge, Md.) caught a lazy fly ball to right to end it.
The final game of the day against Morgan State was postponed due to anticipated weather and darkness.

UMBC will play four games at The Diamond next weekend. They will face Hofstra and Brown on Friday, before a doubleheader with Hofstra on Saturday. Saturday's doubleheader will be a 50th Anniversary of Title IX Celebration.
