Game 2
BALTIMORE --
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out 26 batters in nine innings pitched, including a school-record 20 in a perfect game, as UMBC defeated Hofstra and Brown on Friday at The Diamond
The lefty came on for a two inning save in a 2-0 win over Hofstra, and then pitched her perfect game in a 1-0 win over Brown right after.
It was the seventh no-hitter and second perfect game of Coppersmith's career.
The wins pushed UMBC's winning streak to seven.
Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.),
Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and
Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) all hit solo homers on the day for UMBCÂ (9-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
- Hofstra was able to get the first two batters of the game into scoring position after and infield hit and an error, but two-time defending America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) was able to escape thanks to a pair of pop-ups and a strikeout.
- The game was scoreless until two outs in the bottom of the fourth, when Hawker sent a 3-1 pitch way beyond the fence in left-center to make it 1-0 UMBC
- The Pride got a runner to second with one out in the top of the fifth, but Matter was again able to avoid any damage and keep it 1-0.
- Coppersmith came in to pitch in the top of the sixth, and allowed an infield single after striking out the first batter, but struck out the next two to keep the Retrievers up.
- Lonchar padded the lead with a no-doubt homer of her own in the bottom of the sixth to make it 2-0
- Coppersmith struck out the first two batters in the top of the seventh, but another infield single put the tying run at the plate. Coppersmith, however, would strike out the batter to give UMBC the win and pick up her third save of the season.
Matter improved to 5-1 after going 5.0 innings, striking out seven, walking none and allowing just three hits. She also picked up her first career hit at the plate in the third.Â
Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) went 2-for-2 with a walk for UMBC
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
- Coppersmith struck out the first nine batters of the game.
- Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) returned to the lineup and would hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the third, but was stranded.
- The first batter of the fourth for Brown tried to bunt to reach, but Lonchar would run in from third to field it and her throw just beat the runner at first for the out.
- With one out in the fourth, Pierce sent the first pitch she saw over the wall in left-center to make it 1-0 UMBC
- Coppersmith would strike out the final 11 batters of the game to complete the perfect gameÂ
Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) and
Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) also picked up hits for the Retrievers.Â
The Retrievers are off until Wednesday when they travel to College park to take on Maryland. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
