Towson, Md. – In a game that was separated by a single goal for nearly all of the final 40 minutes of play, host Towson edged UMBC, 11-10, in men's lacrosse action at Unitas Stadium.
Junior midfielder
Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) paced the Retrievers' goal scoring with a three-goal effort. Junior attackman
Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) added two goals and two assists.
Sophomore midfielder
Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) gave the Retrievers a 10-9 lead with 6:26 remaining, but the Tigers generated the sixth tie and fourth lead change of the game with scores a minute part at the 5:04 and 4:04 marks.
UMBC sophomore defenseman
Colby Weishaar (Westminster, Md./Boys' Latin) forced a Tiger turnover and drew a 30-second penalty with 34 seconds remaining. The Retrievers were patient and worked the ball inside to Doughty, but his shot with four seconds left was wide of the mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a turnover resulted in an early Towson goal, the Retrievers countered on a fast-break and defensemen Tony Diallo (Suitland, Md.) bounced in his first career goal from long range to knot the score at 1-1.
- The Retrievers took a 4-1 lead as Dupuis, Doughty and Tregoning scored on well-placed shots in a span of 4:11.
- UMBC got the final possession of the quarter and Doughy found a rumbling junior middie Dane Hall (Harwood, Md.), who finished from close range with seven seconds to play in the first quarter. The Retrievers led, 5-1, after 15 minutes.
- Towson scored at the 2:17 mark of the second quarter to end the UMBC run. That goal would start a 5-0 second quarter run.
- The Tigers grabbed a 6-5 lead at the 5:37 mark of the period, but the Retrievers scored twice in the final 3:40 of the half to grab a 7-6 halftime advantage.
- Doughty scored his second of the game at 3:40, then fed a cutting Jordan Galloway (Grasonville, Md.), who one-timed the pass from close range with 1:21 to play in the half.
- Dupuis scored both of UMBC's third quarter goals, as each team scored twice in the period.
- Towson tied the score at 9-9 at the 11:27 mark of the fourth period, setting up the end of game sequence.
UMBC sophomore face-off specialist
Zach Dudley (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) took all 25 draws in the game and won 14.
Towson outshot UMBC, 45-35, and Retriever senior goalkeeper
Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made eight saves.
