BALTIMORE – Eight different Retrievers found the nets as UMBC knocked off No. 20 Utah, 13-10, in the first night men's lacrosse game on the Bermuda grass of Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC (2-2) now has two victories over ranked opponents on its 2022 temporary home. They opened with a 12-8 win over No. 17 Drexel, but dropped a pair of one-goal decisions on the road in between the victories.
"I'm really happy with the effort we put in throughout the week, it was a full team effort," said head coach
Ryan Moran. "It was nice to see some of our younger guys get an opportunity to step in there and get some big goals in a Friday night game."
Five Retrievers scored two goals each, including junior attackman
Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and junior midfielder
Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.), who also added an assist apiece. Sophomore midfielder
Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) scored once and added two helpers.
Senior goalkeeper
Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made six of his 10 saves in the fourth quarter.
UMBC's 5-0 scoring run in the second quarter reversed a 3-2 deficit and the Utes would not climb inside a two-goal gap the rest of the way.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tregoning and freshman Jordan Galloway (Grasonville, Md./DeMatha) gave UMBC a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes, but the Utes opened the second quarter with a pair of scores in the first 3:08.
- Mike Doughty and Galloway scored unassisted goals 77 seconds apart midway through the period as the Retrievers tallied four times in a span of 4:57. Doughty ended the 5-0 run and gave UMBC a 7-3 halftime lead, converting a Dupuis inside feed with 36 seconds to play in the half.
- Utah cut the lead to 7-5 and 8-6, but Dupuis and junior midfielder Dane Hall (Harwood, Md.) responded a minute apart just shy of the third quarter's midpoint. Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) completed the 3-0 run and gave UMBC its biggest lead at 11-6 with 6:12 to play in the third period.
- Utah crept to within 12-9 with 8:04 to play in the fourth period. The Utes won the ensuing draw, but Lingner made a key save and, on an offensive re-set, younger brother Kevin Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) put away a Hall pass to restore the lead to 13-9 with 5:55 remaining.
Baucia, Galloway and
Kevin Doughty all scored two goals for UMBC.
Utah entered the game averaging 13.0 goals per game and the 10 they scored versus UMBC was a season low. It was the Utes' first road loss of the year and came on the heels of their 16-10 win at No. 11 Jacksonville.
UMBC hits the road for a Sunday, March 20 date at Richmond (3:00 p.m.)
