- Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) had an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to score Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and cut the Bears lead to 2-1.
- In the bottom of the second, Granzow delivered a two-out, two-strike single up the middle to score Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and Coppersmith to put the Retrievers up 3-2.
- Morgan State loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) got a pop-up to escape the jam
- Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) entered in relief and worked a pair of scoreless innings.
- Granzow got the bottom of the fifth started with a single and moved to second on an Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) sacrifice bunt. She would then score on a Pierce RBI single that pushed the lead to 4-2
- Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) then drove in Pierce with a two-out base hit to make it 5-2
- Coppersmith would enter in the top of the sixth for her first pitching appearance of the season and would strike out five over the next two innings to earn the save.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 2:
- A pair of errors and a passed ball put two in scoring position in the top of the first for St.John's, but Matter got her third strikeout of the inning to end the threat.
- Lonchar would lead off the bottom of the second with a solo homer to put UMBC up 1-0.
- It would remain 1-0 until the sixth when Coppersmith reached on a two-out error and would score on a Granzow RBI single.
- Matter would strike out the first two batters of the seventh before allowing a single. She would get the next batter, her 17th strikeout of the game, to cap off another dominating performance.
The Retrievers are back in action again tomorrow at The Diamond when they face the same two teams. UMBC and SJU will meet at noon, followed by a rematch with the Bears at 2 p.m.
