Men's Lacrosse Drops 14-9 Decision at RIchmond

Tregoning, Galloway scored two goals each in setback.

Richmond, Va. – The host Richmond Spiders outscored UMBC, 7-3, in the second half and sent on to outlast the Retrievers, 14-9, at Robins Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman middie Jordan Galloway (Grasonville, Md.) scored two goals apiece for UMBC, while sophomore attackman Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) dished out three assists.

UMBC senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) recorded a season-high 13 saves and moved into sixth place on the school's all-time list with 422.

The Retrievers netted the game's first goal, but UR responded with three consecutive tallies and led the rest of the way. UMBC sliced a 7-3 second quarter deficit to 7-6 at halftime, but were outscored, 4-1, in the third quarter.

UMBC committed 21 turnovers and nine of the Spiders' first 11 goals occurred after Retriever miscues.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tregoning opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 74 seconds into the contest, but UR took advantage of two UMBC failed clears to lead, 3-1, with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Spiders led, 5-3, after one quarter and extend the margin to 7-3, before UMBC closed the half on a 3-0 run.
  • Galloway, Tregoning and junior midfielder Dane Hall (Harwood, Md.) scored in a span of 2:17. Hall's extra-man goal on a feed from graduate student Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) with 52 seconds reaming in the half gave UMBC the momentum heading into the locker rooms.
  • The Spiders scored twice in the first 4:06 of the third quarter before Baucia gave the Retrievers a spark as he curled the net and scored at the 8:26 mark. But the hosts extended their 9-7 lead to 13-7 with two goals each in the late third and early fourth quarters to put the game out of reach.
UMBC opens America East Conference play at Binghamton on Saturday, March 26.
