Hawker’s Eight RBI Leads Softball to Sunday Sweep

BALTIMORE- Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) hit two homers and drove in eight runs to lead the UMBC Softball team to a pair of wins on Sunday that pushed the Retrievers win streak to 13.


UMBC (15-4) rallied for a 10-9 win over Quinnipiac in the first game and then defeated Lafayette, 10-1 in five innings in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 1:
  • UMBC went up 1-0 in the first on an error and then it became 4-0 in the second on a Hawker three-run homer.
  • Quinnipiac responded with a run to cut into the lead in the third, but the Retrievers answered right back with three runs of their own to make it 7-1
  • After a run scored on an error, a Hawker sacrifice fly made it 6-1, followed by a Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) RBI squeeze bunt to make it 7-1.
  • The Bobcats fought back and eventually led 9-7 in the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) sacrifice fly scored Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) to make it 9-8 and an Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) RBI single scored Julia Colton (Elkridge, Md.) to tie the game up at nine
  • Hawker the ripped an RBI single to score Lonchar and give UMBC a 10-9 lead
  • QU got a leadoff double in the top of the seventh, but Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) struck out the next three batters to secure the win. 

Stott finished 3-for-4, while Hawker added two hits and five RBI. Matter pitched the final 1.2 innings to pick up the win and move to 8-1 on the season

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 2:
  • UMBC jumped out to an early lead in the second on a Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) two-run single that scored Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio)
  • Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and make it 3-0
  • Lafayette responded with a solo homer in the third, but O'Berg escaped further damage
  • UMBC made it 5-1 in the fourth on a Della Guardia sacrifice fly and a Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) RBI double.
  • The Retrievers would end the game via run-rule in the fifth on a Pierce two-RBI double and a Hawker walk-off three-run homer.
O'Berg pitched all five innings to pick up the win and move to 3-1 on the season. Turner and Coppersmith each had three hits in the victory.
