The UMBC men's lacrosse team (2-2) wraps up its rigorous non-conference schedule on Sunday, March 20 when they visit the Richmond Spiders (3-3). The opening face-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Robins Stadium and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

UMBC (2-2) snapped a two-game slide with an impressive 13-10 win over No. 20 Utah on March 11 at Retriever Soccer Park. The Retrievers are 2-0 on the Bermuda grass of Retriever Soccer Park and have suffered a pair of one-goal losses on the road.

Junior attackman Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) leads a balanced attack with eight goals and three assists through four games. Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) is right behind with seven goals and two helpers, while junior midfielder Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) has six goals and two assists in three outings.  

Senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) stands tenth in the nation in goals against average (9.17). As a team, UMBC ranks 11th in scoring defense (9.50).

NOTES FROM THE UTAH GAME

• For the second consecutive year, UMBC has knocked off two ranked teams. Last season, the Retrievers defeated No. 16 Vermont and No. 14 Stony Brook and both victories in 2022 have come over ranked opponents (No. 17 Drexel, No. 20 Utah).

 

• Freshmen Kevin Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and Davis Burleson (Essex, Conn.) each scored their first collegiate goals versus the Utes.

 
RETRIEVER NOTEBOOK

• A season ago, UMBC won four of five one-goal decisions, but are 0-2 in those ultra-thin margins in 2022. 

 

• UMBC has captured two America East awards to date. The league tabbed freshman Kevin Doughty  as its Rookie of the Week for his two-goal effort in the 13-10 win over Utah. Graduate student attackman Brett Baucia earned Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 21, 2022. He scored a career-high four goals in UMBC's opening 12-8 win over preseason No. 17 Drexel on Feb. 19.

 

• UMBC's five home games and any home playoff action in 2022 will be played on the grass surface of Retriever Soccer Park. The UMBC Stadium Complex (https://fm.umbc.edu/umbc-stadium-upgrades-project-need-to-know/) is currently undergoing major upgrades and construction will continue through the spring months.

 

• The UMBC men's lacrosse team has selected fifth-year senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) as its captains for the 2022 spring campaign. Both players are first-year captains.

 

• Lingner allowed only 9.18 goals per game in 2021, leading America East and finishing sixth in the nation. As a freshman, the Retriever netminder led the country with a 7.33 GAA. Lingner just became the seventh goalkeeper in school history to record 400 saves. His 409 stops is two shy of tying Steve Cohen (1973-75) for sixth on UMBC's all-time list.

 

• Graduate student Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) just became the third Retriever in school history to amass 60 caused turnovers.

 

• UMBC suffered heavy losses on its attack unit, with fifth-years Ryan Frawley and Brett McIntyre and senior Trevor Patschorke earning degrees. The trio combined for 291 points during their tenures on Hilltop Circle.

 

• Freshman attackman Josh Tang (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) could step into a prominent role in 2022. Inside Lacrosse unveiled its Power 100 Incoming Freshman Rankings for the Class of 2022 and Tang earned the No. 82 spot amongst the nation's elite first-year players.

 
 

• Fresh off winning its first-ever America East men's lacrosse title in 2021, Vermont is the preseason favorite to top the standings in 2022. The Retrievers were picked fourth, by just two points behind second-place Stony Brook. UMBC received the only first place vote which did not go to the Catamounts.

 

• Ryan Moran enters his sixth season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in four of the five full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist.  Moran is 32-31 overall and 16-11 in America East play.

 

• Nick Griffin, UMBC '21, has joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Griffin has been a member of the Retriever men's lacrosse program since the fall of 2016. As a sophomore in the spring of 2018, the defenseman became the first UMBC men's lacrosse NCAA Division I student-athlete tabbed to the Google Cloud Academic All-American team. Griffin was named the team's captain in both 2020 and 2021. Griffin joins Joe Bucci and Craig Chick on the UMBC sidelines this season.

 
A GLANCE AT THE SPIDERS   

• Richmond is 3-3, but all three losses have occurred to programs ranked in the top ten. They have dropped two straight, falling at No. 10 Duke, 14-8 on March 5 and losing to No. 5 Georgetown, 15-10 on home on March 12.

 

• The Spiders knocked off Towson, 16-15, in three overtimes on Feb. 26, the week before UMBC dropped an 11-10 decision to the Tigers.

 

• Junior attackman Dalton Young, who scored three times versus the Hoyas, leads UR with 15 goals. Graduate student attackman Ryan Lanchbury is the top point scorer with 13 goals and 18 assists (tied for fifth nationally).  

 

• The Spiders are controlling 48.5 percent at the face-off x. Sophomore goalkeeper Devin Craven is maintaining a 9.52 goals against average and a 60.3 save percentage.

 
SERIES NOTES  

• The two teams have split six games, with each school winning 2 of 3 at home. In the last match-up, UR triumphed at Robins Stadium, 17-12, on Feb. 19, 2019. Lanchbury tallied five goals in that contest.
