Softball Hosts UMBC Spring Invite This Weekend

Fresh off a road win at Big Ten foe Maryland, the UMBC Softball team takes its eight game winning-streak to the UMBC Spring Invite. 

The Retrievers will host a double header against Lafayette on Friday, followed by a single game against Quinnipiac on Saturday, and then a match-up against each team on Sunday. 

Live stats and live video will be available for all games.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • UMBC (10-4) scored two runs apiece in the second, fourth and sixth innings and senior pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) battled through seven innings as the Retrievers defeated Maryland, 6-2, at Maryland Softball Stadium.
  • The Retrievers have won eight consecutive games and defeated Maryland for the first time since 1997. The Terrapins had won 14 consecutive games in the series.
  • Four Retrievers collected two hits apiece. Coppersmith went 2-for-4, with a pair of RBI's, while Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) also banged out two hits, with a run scored and an RBI. Senior Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and classmate Logan Hawker added two hits apiece.
Scouting the Leopards:
  • Lafayette (5-10) wrapped up its seven-game stint at The Spring Games in the Sunshine State with a pair of losses (8-0, 7-0) in a doubleheader vs. Niagara on Tuesday afternoon.
  • Kinzi Van Wyk is the ace of the Leopards pitching staff, as she's 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA
  • Natasha Miner leads the team with a .313 average, 15 hits and 12 runs
Scouting the Bobcats: 
  • Quinnipiac (2-8) played a single game against the Lipscomb Bison on Wednesday, March 16 and lost, 6-0. First-year Sydney Horan pitched six innings, tallying six strikeouts FOR the Bobcats. 
  • Jaclyn Gonzalez owns a a team-best 2.69 ERA
  • Brooke Hilliard and Bridget Nasir are tied for the team lead with a .281 average.
  • Nasir's five RBI lead the team
