BALTIMORE --
Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) picked up his 10th multi-hit game and
Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) also had a pair of hits, but the UMBC Baseball team fell to visiting UMass, 10-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
How It Happened:
- UMass (4-4-1) put up seven runs in the top of the second to go up 7-0.
- UMBC (7-9) got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) scored ona wild pitch.
- The Minutemen answered right back with three runs in the top of the third to go up 10-1
- Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) started the bottom of the third with a walk, advanced to second on a Diaz single, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) groundout.
- The score would remain 10-2 until the sixth when a Taylor sacrifice fly scored Diaz, and Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) would cut the deficit to to 10-5 with a two-run single later in the inning.
- No one would score for the final three innings as UMass held on.
Shane Gorman (Orland Park, Ill.) pitched five scoreless innings of relief for the Retrievers
UMBC opens up America East play on Friday when it welcomes UAlbany to Alumni field. All America East series this season will be three games, one each day Friday-Sunday. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
