BOSTON -- UMBC softball's
Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) was named America East Rookie of the Week for the third straight week, while
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named the Pitcher of the Week.
Last Friday, Coppersmith threw the second perfect game of her career, striking out 20 batters in a 1-0 win over Brown. In the game before, she struck out six in a scoreless two-inning save.
Matter improved to 5-1 on the season by pitching five scoreless innings against Hofstra. She struck out seven and walked none.
UMBC (9-4) takes its seven-game winning streak to College Park to face the Terrapins on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus.
Scouting the Retrievers:
- UMBC beat Hofstra and Brown by scores of 2-0 and 1-0 last Friday
- Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.), Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) all hit solo homers on the day for UMBC
- Pierce is hitting a team-high .400, and is leading the team in RBI (8), hits (16), doubles (5), total bases (24) and stolen bases (2)
- Lonchar has a team-best three home runs and is tied with Coppersmith in hits and average, batting .324 with 11 hits
- Coppersmith leads the team with seven runs scored
Scouting the Terrapins:
- Maryland routed host James Madison, 12-5, in the JMU Dukes Invitational on Friday night.
- The Terps scored early and often in ending their five-game losing streak to move to 10-11 on the season.
- Michaela Jones was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, while Megan Mikami went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
- Taylor Okada was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. The other Terps' runs were driven in by Mackense Greico, Taylor Liguori, Kiley Goff and Merissa Borkowski.
- Maryland stole seven bases -- two of home plate -- with Mikami swiping three, one of home and Goff getting the other-scoring steal.
