Baseball Drops Pitching Duel at GW

Retrievers to Host UMass on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Arlington, Va. – Four Retriever pitchers only allowed two runs, but the UMBC bats were silenced by George Washington pitching and fell to the Colonials, 2-0, Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.

UMBC (7-8) did manage seven hits, just one fewer than GW, but stranded six, including three in scoring position.

Graduate student second baseman Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) had a pair of hits, including a double, but was caught stealing twice. Matt Ryan also doubled for UMBC.
GW scored single runs in the third and seventh innings.

Senior starter Keegan Leffler (Wilton, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing just one run in the third inning. He has not walked a batter in his last three appearances, totaling 13 innings. Senior Owen Hamilton (San Anselmo, Calif.) also threw three frames and also allowed one Colonial run.

UMBC put the tying runs on base with just one out in the ninth inning. A one-out single by freshman Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) moved senior Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) to third base, but the a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

UMBC hosts UMass on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The Minutemen are 3-4 after Tuesday's 4-3 win at Navy. Drew DeMartino's double in the eighth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and drove in the winning run.
UMass lost 2-of-3 to open the season at Georgetown.
