The UMBC Softball team looks to continue its winning ways when it hosts Hofstra and Brown on Friday at The Diamond. UMBC and Hofstra will play at noon, followed by a matchup with Brown immediately after. Due to anticipated bad weather, Saturday's doubleheader against Hofstra has been canceled.
Scouting the Retrievers
- UMBC (7-4) is riding a five-game winning streak after taking all three games last weekend against Morgan State and St.John's
- For the second straight week, freshman Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) was named both America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week.Matter went 2-0 with 28 strikeouts and just four hits allowed in 12 scoreless inning pitched last weekend.
- Outfielder Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) leads the Retrievers with a .400 average, 14 hits, seven RBI, five doubles and 19 total bases
- Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) has a .393 average at the plate and returned to the circle last week to pick up two saves in four scoreless innings of work
Scouting the Pride
- Hofstra (2-12) enters the weekend after going 2-3 last weekend at the Cardinal Classic at Louisville.
- The Pride defeated the hosts 2-1 before dropping a 4-0 decision to Western Michigan. They then got revenge on the Broncos with a 10-2 (6) win before falling 8-0 to Illinois. The weekend concluded with a 3-2 loss to Louisville.
- Julia Aspel leads the ptiching staff with a 2.42 ERA and a 2-4 record.
- Chelsea Manto paces the offense with a .354 average and 17 hits.
Scouting the Bears
- Brown (4-6) dropped its home-opener, 6-1, to Providence on Tuesday
- Six different pitchers have made a start for Brown, with Alexis Guevara pitching a team-high 19.0 innings. She has a 1.84 ERA and a 1-1 record
- Guevara also leads the offense with a .333 average. Laurel Moody has hit three of the team's four homers this season
