Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Edges Hartford for Second-Straight Win

Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) calmly buried a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to push the lead to three as the UMBC Women's Basketball team won its second-straight, 51-48, over host Hartford on Wednesday night. 

Loan-Anh Johnson (Wichita, Kan.) stole the ball on Hartford's final possession to seal the win.


Janee's Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) paced the Retriever offense with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Esadah finished with 12 and eight off the bench.


HOW IT HAPPENED

·       Summers hit an early field goal and a trey, but UMBC trailed, 10-8, at the midpoint of the first quarter

·       UMBC ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run and led, 11-10, after 10 minutes.

·       The Retrievers extended the run to 11-0 on a Onome-Juliet Esadah hook shot and led 16-10 at the at the 8:09 mark of the second quarter

·       UMBC held Hartford to 29.0 percent shooting and outrebounded the hosts, 25-17 to take a 26-21 lead into intermission.

·       The Retrievers opened the second half on a 7-2 run to build the lead to a game-high 33-23 four minutes into the third quarter.

·       But the hosts scored the final six points of the period and cut the UMBC lead to 36-35 after 30 minutes.

·       Summers re-ignited early in the fourth, hitting a field goal and a trey to spark a 9-4 opening fourth period run.   

·       But Hartford battled back to trim their deficit to one point on two occasions in the final 93 seconds.

 

UMBC returns home for two games in three days when they host UMass Lowell on Saturday at 3:30 followed by Valentine's Day contest against Stony Brook at 5 p.m. on Monday.
