Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) scored a career-high tying 25 points for the second time in three games, but a late 18-2 run helped visiting UMass Lowell to a 70-68 victory over the UMBC Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
UMBC shot a 2021-22 NCAA single-game best 10-of-12 from three (83.3%), with
Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) going 4-for-4 from deep.
Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) had 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for the Retrievers, while
Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.) finished with 10 points
How it Happened:
- UMass Lowell came out firing, hitting five treys in the first quarter, but UMBC went- 3-for-3 from deep and hit five free throws to keep the River Hawk lead withing one possession, 19-16 after one.
- Both teams struggled from the field in the second, but Summers collected 17 first half points to keep the Retrievers within two, 34-32, at the break
- UMBC shot a blistering 9-of-12 from the floor in the third, including a perfect 4-of-4 from three as they outscored the visitors 25-13 in the quarter and took a 57-47 lead into the final frame.Â
- An Esadah layup with 7:46 left gave UMBC a game-high 12 point lead at 61-49, but the River Hawks would then go on an 18-2 run to take a 67-63 lead with 28 seconds left.
- Another Esadah layup was followed by two UML free throws to make int 69-65 with five seconds left. Marquez would drain a three with three seconds left to cut the lead to 69-68.
- Lowell split a pair of free throws with just over two seconds left, but UMBC could not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded
