Women's Basketball Rallies from 17-Point Second Half Deficit to Defeat Host New Hampshire

Durham, N.H. – The UMBC women's basketball team outscored host UNH, 23-4, in the fourth quarter, wiping out a 14-point deficit and triumphing, 57-52, at Lundholm Gymnasium.

After being blanked versus UAlbany on Wednesday, UMBC graduate student Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) bounced back in a huge way, leading the Retrievers with a career-high tying 25 points. She buried a career best five treys in ten attempts.
The stunning comeback snapped the Retrievers' 15-game losing streak, which was interrupted on multiple occasions by game postponements and cancellations.

Sophomore guard Alexia Nelson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted three free throws with no time remaining in the third quarter to shave a game-high 17-point deficit to 14 points. UMBC began the fourth quarter, trailing, 48-34. After an exchange of field goals to start the period, the Retrievers held UNH scoreless for 7:52 and scored 12 consecutive points to cut a 50-36 deficit to 50-48 with 2:32 remaining.

The Wildcats hit a bucket with 70 seconds left to restore their lead to 52-48, but Summers drained a trey from the left wing to bring UMBC to within 52-51 with 54 seconds remaining. After empty possessions by both teams, Summers stole the ball, drew a foul and calmly sank two free throws with 21 seconds left to give UMBC its first lead since the opening minute of play.

UNH would not get a shot off on its final two possessions, committing a pair of turnovers. Graduate student guard Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) hit two free throws with 11 seconds left and Nelson sealed the win with a layup just before the final horn.

The Retrievers recorded 10 fourth quarter steals, which led to 15 of their 23 fourth quarter points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
·       Summers sunk a trey on the first possession of the game, but the Wildcats scored the next eight points to lead, 8-3, at the 7:28 mark of the first quarter.
·       Another Summers' field goal would knot the score at 8-all, but UNH took a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes.
·       Scoring half of UMBC's 24 first half points, Summers converted a trey to bring UMBC to within 25-24 with 1:36 to play in the second quarter, but the hosts took a 31-24 lead into the break.
·       UMBC struggled mightily in the third quarter, turning the ball over nine times and were outscored, 17-10.
Summers hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor and all four free throw attempts. Junior guard Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) also hit double figures with 10 points.
