Orono, Maine – Host Maine outscored UMBC, 23-9, in the second quarter and went on to defeat the Retrievers, 71-47, at Memorial Gymnasium.

Onome-Juliet Esadah (Delta State, Nigeria) led the visitors with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Esadah hit all six attempts from the field and both free throw attempts. Junior

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers held the Black Bears to three field goals (3-of-17) in the first quarter and took a 11-7 lead after 10 minutes. Dixon scored five points and Esadah added four.
- Maine hit 7-of-14 field goal attempts and 8-of-11 from the stripe in the second quarter. UMBC attempted just one free throw in the period. The Black Bears opened the quarter on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good and surged in front, 30-20, at intermission.
- The Black Bears opened the third quarter with a 16-5 run and led, 54-33, after 30 minutes.
The Retrievers did outscore Maine, 34-28, in the paint.
UMBC, which was eliminated from post-season competition with the setback, concludes the season at Binghamton on Wednesday, March 2.
