Matter Hurls No-Hitter; UMBC Softball Splits with Coppin State and Georgetown

UMBC softball started the weekend on a high note with a sensational outing from freshman Kay Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) who hurled a no-hitter in just her second collegiate game in a 1-0 win against Coppin State. The rookie struckout 18, a school record in the win.

BALTIMORE– UMBC softball started the weekend on a high note with a sensational outing from freshman Kay Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) who hurled a no-hitter in just her second collegiate game in a 1-0 win against Coppin State. The rookie struckout 18, a school record in the win.

UMBC ended the day with a 13-6 loss to Georgetown. The Retrievers had a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but the Hoyas plated 10 straight to take an 11-3 lead and not look back. 

HOW IT HAPPENED - UMBC 1, Coppin State 0
  • UMBC got runners on in the first three innings but stranded runners on base.
  • Coppin State would get their first baserunner in the fourth inning on a walk, but a pair of Matter strikeouts ended the threat.
  • The Retrievers and Eagles battled through the first six innings with neither side able to do much offensively, but it was the Retrievers who finally broke through in the seventh.
  • Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) provided the heroics with a walk-off single that scored Jaedyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) who came in as a pinch runner.
  • UMBC mustered eight hits, but it was Matter who stole the show with the no-hitter on a school-record 18 strikeouts, walking just the one batter.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Georgetown 13, UMBC 6
  • The Hoyas broke through first getting a run in their half of the first.
  • UMBC responded with three runs in the bottom half. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) doubled in Coppersmith, with Zoe Russell (Roxboro, N.C.) blasting a two-run home run to make it 3-1 Retrievers. 
  • Georgetown however scored the next ten runs over the next four innings to take an 11-3 lead.
  • Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) cut the deficit to 11-4 after her solo home run in the sixth, but the Hoyas would get two more in the seventh to make it 13-4.
  • O'Berg came through again in the seventh with a two-RBI single that scored Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md./Allegany), as the game ended 13-6.
  • Pierce went 2-3 from the dish with O'Berg driving in three of the six runs. 

UMBC concludes the weekend tomorrow against Coppin State and Georgetown at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
