BALTIMORE– UMBC softball picked up a pair of big wins on Sunday, taking down Georgetown 6-2 before handing Coppin State an 11-3 loss to end the weekend.
Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) had another dazzling performance on the mound against the Hoyas, while
Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) led the charge against the Eagles.
UMBC improves to 4-4 on the year with the wins.
HOW IT HAPPENED - UMBC 6, Georgetown 2
- The Retrievers wasted no time getting a pair of runs in the first. Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) laced a single that scored Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) who got on with a single. Stott would later score on an Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) double to left center to make it 2-0.
- That would be all that Matter would need as the freshman struck out four of the next seven batters she faced.
- UMBC tacked on to their lead in the fourth. Lonchar scored on a fielding error just before Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) blasted a two-run home run to make it 5-0.
- Georgetown answered with a solo home run in the fifth, but Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) had the answer in their half with an RBI single.
- The Hoyas would add another in the sixth, but Matter kept the Hoyas at bay in the seventh to give UMBC a 6-2 win.
- Matter struck out 13 batters in a complete game after striking out 18 yesterday, scattering four hits in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED - UMBC 11, Coppin State 3:
- UMBC once again got on the front foot with runs in the first and second innings. Lonchar singled home Keating in the first and Keating returned the favor driving in Chloe Obispo (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the second.
- After the Eagles cut the deficit to 2-1, UMBC ripped off three straight in the third. Lonchar smashed a solo home run, O'Berg doubled home Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech/CCBC Catonsville), and Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice that scored Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) to make it 5-1.
- Coppin State would stay within striking distance with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Retrievers distanced themselves from there.
- The Retrievers got a two-run home run from Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md./Garrison Forest School/Appalachian State) in the fourth, and an RBI single from Hawker before O'Berg ended it with a three-run blast in the sixth to win 11-3.
- O'Berg drove in four of the 11 runs with Lonchar and Wilson driving in two each.
The Retrievers will continue their season-opening homestand with their third home tournament next Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6. UMBC will welcome Morgan State and St. John's to The Diamond.
