Emmitsburg – UMBC (1-1) cut a four-goal halftime deficit to one on two occasions, but could not complete the rally and fell, 9-8, at Mount St. Mary's (3-2) in blustery conditions at Waldron Family Stadium.
Senior attackman
Jack Thomas (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led a balanced attack with a goal and two assists. Junior attackman
Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) was the lone multiple Retriever goal scorer with a pair.
Doughty's second goal of the fourth quarter cut the Mount lead to 9-8 with 2:52 remaining, The Retrievers won the ensuing face-off, but Doughty's shot with 2:11 remaining was saved and a pair of subsequent efforts went wide. The Mount regained possession and did allow UMBC another scoring opportunity.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mount scored opened and closed the scoring in the first quarter, taking a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes. Dane Hall scored the Retrievers' goal, ripping a shot home from the left alley on a pass from Nick Dupuis. The extra-man goal was scored at the 9:28 mark.
- The Retrievers were beset by several failed clears and turnovers in the second quarter and the hosts took advantage, outscoring UMBC, 3-0, including a pair of goals in the final 2:21 of the half.
- Sophomore Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) scored at the 6:32 mark of the third quarter, breaking a scoring drought of 27:04 and junior Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) recorded a man-up goal 50 seconds later to shave the margin to 5-3.
- But the Mount outscored, UMBC, 2-1, the rest of the way in the third quarter and led, 7-4, after 45 minutes.
- After an exchange of goals, senior Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) scored his first of the year with 10 minutes remaining and Doughy scored 37 seconds later to bring UMBC to within one goal for the first time since early in the second quarter.
- After an unforced turnover by UMBC wound up in the back of their unguarded net with 5:30 to play, Doughty cut the deficit to 9-8 on a feed from graduate student attackman Brett Baucia. (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) with 2:52 remaining.
Baucia, Bohanan and Dupuis each contributed a goal and an assist each.
Senior goalkeeper
Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made 11 saves as Mount outshot UMBC, 44-28.
UMBC suffered 20 turnovers and failed on 9 of 24 clearing attempts.
The Retrievers face Towson at Unitas Stadium next Saturday at noon.
