BALTIMORE – UMBC scored six runs in the fifth inning and junior
Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief as the Retrievers knocked off St. Joseph's, 6-1, to earn their first victory of the season.
UMBC (1-3) fell, 19-2, to Seton Hall in five innings of the nightcap at CCBC-Catonsville.

HOW IT HAPPENED – UMBC 6, St. Joseph's 1
- Starter Madie Leach (Erie, Colo.) gave the team 4.1 innings of solid work, only allowing one unearned run on five hits. The Hawks scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth.
- With one out in the UMBC fifth, Ashely DellaGuardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Turner got on via base hits and advanced to third and second on a SJU wild pitch. Granzow singled to center to plate DellaGuardia and then advanced to second on the throw home.
- With two outs, Pierce got the big hit, a double to left field, which plated Turner and Granzow.
- Lonchar, Coppersmith and junior Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) all followed with base hits to score runs 4,5, and 6.
- O'Berg stranded two runners each in the sixth and seventh innings to secure her third career winning decision.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Seton Hall 19, UMBC 2, 5 innings
- Seton Hall took advantage of a short-handed UMBC pitching staff and scored 13 times in the final two innings in the shortened game.
- In her first plate appearance of the season, senior Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) banged out a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the fifth.
- Keating and Coppersmith would score on two-out singles by Turner and Granzow.
UMBC is slated to return home on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26 and 27 to host Coppin State and Georgetown.
