BALTIMORE-- The UMBC Women's Basketball went into the half tied, but first place Stony Brook (21-3, 12-2 AE) pulled away in the second half to defeat the host Retrievers, 64-48, on Monday night at The Peake.
Graduate student
Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) paced the UMBC offense with 16 points, hitting four of six from deep, while
Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.). finished with 10 points.
Freshman
Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) tallied a career-high nine points in the contest
How it happened:
- The Seawolves jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but Summers went on a personal 11-1 run to put UMBC up 13-10 with just under two minutes left in the quarter.
- SBU would score the final six point of the first, including a buzzer-beating put-back, to take a 16-13 lead into the second quarter
- It was a back-and-forth second quarter until a 9-0 UMBC run put the Retrievers up 28-22 with just over three minutes left in the half.Â
- The run started with a pair of Settle free throws, followed by an Alexia Nelson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) steal and feed to Drake who hit a layup to give UMBC the lead. Drake and Summers would cap the run with back-to-back threes in a 38 second span
- The Seawolves roared back with eight straight to re-take the lead at 30-28, but Drake hit two free throws to send the game into the break tied at 30.Â
- Stony Brook used an early 13-4 run to pull ahead in the third. Drake would hit a three to cut the deficit to 43-37 with 4:13 left in the third, and UMBC would get a chance to cut it to one possession, but a turnover and layup on the other end pushed the lead back to eight. The Retrievers would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
The two teams meet again on Wednesday on Long Island, Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and fans can watch on ESPN+ or SNY on cable.Â
