The UMBC Retrievers (10-4-1, 4-2-0 America East) wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 1 when they take on the host Binghamton Bearcats (4-8-4, 2-2-2 AE) in Vestal, N.Y.
The opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Retrievers are guaranteed to host at least one contest in the America East Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal action on Saturday, Nov. 5. UMBC can finish no lower than the No. 4 seed in the six-team tournament and could earn a bye and No. 2 seed if the Retrievers and UAlbany Great Danes both win in the final day of league play.
RETRIEVER NOTES
- Senior Ryan Becher scored 59 seconds into the match and UMBC men's soccer celebrated Senior Night with a 4-1 victory over NJIT in chilly conditions at Retriever Soccer Park on Friday evening. .Becher and junior forward Taylor Calheira – the most productive scoring duo in the nation - each scored twice and Becher added his 20th career assist.
- UMBC is now unbeaten in its last six games (5-0-1).
- The 10-win season is UMBC's first since 2018.
- UMBC's victory over NJIT was the 500th in program history. In its 55th season of competition, the Retrievers are currently 500-363-121 (.569)
- UMBC was ranked fifth in the Northeast Region as of Oct. 25.
- For the fourth consecutive week, the America East Conference has tabbed UMBC senior midfielder Becher as its Offensive Player of the Week.
- Becher becomes the first Retriever to post double figures in goals (13) and assists (10) since a pair of Retrievers (Andrew Bulls, Levi Houapeu) did it in 2009. His 36 points is the most since Houapeu's 43 (15-13-43) in 2009.
- Becher has moved into a tie for eighth place with 20 UMBC career assists, becoming the tenth Retriever to reach the 20-assist plateau. He currently leads the nation in points per game (2.25) and total points (36) and is the nation's lone player to average more than two points per game. Becher is fourth in goals per game (0.81) and seventh in assists per game (0.62).
- Becher now has 13 goals and 10 assists on the season, while Calheira has 10 goals and six helpers. They are the highest scoring duo in the nation with 62 combined points. Eliot Goldthrop and Ryan Carmichael of Hofstra have a combined 54 points.
- United Soccer Coaches announced its College Player of the Week awards on Oct. 19 and UMBC senior midfielder Ryan Becher earned the NCAA Division I men's top national honor.
- UMBC is tied for sixth nationally with 40 goals scored and tied for seventh with 118 points.
- After his 2-0 shutout win at Bryant, senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones moved into sole possession of sixth place on UMBC's all-time shutouts with 14. He just earned his 28th career victory and resides in fifth place on the all-time wins' list. Moreover, his 216 saves are seventh on the school's all-time list.
- Calheira set a school record by scoring 10 seconds into the contest vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on Sept. 2.
- Freshman defender Lasse Kelp earned his second America East Conference honor of the season on Oct. 10, earning Rookie of the Week accolades. Kelp leads all UMBC field players with 1404`minutes played.
- The America East Conference tabbed Spencer Hanks as its Offensive Player of the Week on August 29. Hanks, who missed the entire 2021 season, rehabilitating from ACL surgery, returned to the field and scored three goals and added one assist in the Retrievers' 8-2 win over Fairfield on August 26. Hanks also earned a spot on College Soccer News' Team of the Week for games ending Sept. 4.
- Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. enters his 32nd season at the helm of the Retrievers. The 2014 NSCAA National Coach of the Year now has posted a record of 320-202-81 in his tenure on Hilltop Circle. He is assisted by Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, UMBC, '97, who has spent 25 previous years on the sidelines with Coach Caringi, after four years (1992-95) competing under the Retriever mentors. Pete Caringi III enters year No. 9 on the staff and volunteer assistant coach Sam DeBone is beginning his 24th year in his role.
A GLANCE AT THE BEARCATS
- The Bearcats (4-8-4, 2-2-2 America East) just clinched a spot in the America East Tournament with a 3-1 win at Bryant on Friday.
- Ethan Homler and Will Noecker scored in a 90-second span midway through the first half at Bryant.
