Men's Soccer Plays Final Non-Conference Contest at Navy on Wednesday

The two squads played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in last season's opening match

The UMBC Retrievers (8-4-1, 2-2-0 America East) play their final non-conference match of the season at Navy (4-3-5, 2-1-3 Patriot League) on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
 
RETRIEVER NOTES
 
  • The UMBC men's soccer team won its second consecutive road contest and third in a row overall as the Retrievers blanked Bryant, 2-0 in ideal autumn conditions on Oct. 15.
  • Junior striker Alek Wroblewski (Poznan, Poland) and senior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) recorded UMBC goals and senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) posted his third shutout of the season in the victory.
  • Becher added the primary assist on Wroblewski's first half goal and now has five goals and five assists in his last three contests. He earned his second consecutive America East Player of the Week honor on Monday, Oct. 17.
  • Becher now has 10 goals and eight assists on the season, while junior forward Taylor Calheira has seven goals and six helpers. The duo are 1-2 in the America East scoring race and are the highest scoring duo in the nation with 48 combined points. 
  • With 15 points in his last three games, Becher now leads the nation in points per game (2.15), while Calheira is tied for 12th at 1.67. Becher's ten goals is tied for the fourth-most scored in the nation as of Oct. 17. 
  • Becher (22 goals) became the first Retriever since Pete Caringi III (2013) to reach the 20-goal plateau. His current 2022 total of 28 points is the most since PC3 amassed 29 in that season. The senior earned America East Offensive Player of the Week and College Soccer News' Team of the Week honors for games ending Oct.9.
  • After his 2-0 shutout win at Bryant Jones moved into sole possession of sixth place on UMBC's all-time shutouts with 14. He just earned his 26th career victory, moving him into fifth place on the all-time wins' list.
  • Calheira set a school record by scoring 10 seconds into the contest vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on Sept. 2.
  • Freshman defender Lasse Kelp earned his second America East Conference honor of the season on Oct. 10, earning Rookie of the Week accolades. Kelp leads all UMBC field players with 1037`minutes played.
  • The America East Conference tabbed Spencer Hanks as its Offensive Player of the Week on August 29. Hanks, who missed the entire 2021 season, rehabilitating from ACL surgery, returned to the field and scored three goals and added one assist in the Retrievers' 8-2 win over Fairfield on August 26. Hanks also earned a spot on College Soccer News' Team of the Week for games ending Sept. 4.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. enters his 32nd season at the helm of the Retrievers. The 2014 NSCAA National Coach of the Year now has posted a record of 318-202-80 in his tenure on Hilltop Circle. He is assisted by Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, UMBC, '97, who has spent 25 previous years on the sidelines with Coach Caringi, after four years (1992-95) competing under the Retriever mentors. Pete Caringi III enters year No. 9 on the staff and volunteer assistant coach Sam DeBone is beginning his 24th year in his role. 
 
A GLANCE AT THE MIDSHIPMEN            
  • Navy enters this evening's game with a record of 4-3-5 overall and 2-1-3 in Patriot League play.  
  • After a six-match unbeaten streak (3-0-3), the Mids are now winless in their last three (0-1-2) games.
  • Navy is coming off a 2-2 draw at Lehigh on Saturday. Zach Wagner and Noah Ward propelled the visitors to a 2-1 lead, but Lehigh tied the match in the 78'.
  • David Jackson leads the club with five goals and is 3-for-3 on penalty kicks.
  • Goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook has only allowed 12 goals in 990 minutes of action (1.09 GAA).
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Navy leads the all-time series, 19-7-5, but UMBC is 2-0-1 versus the Mids in the last three meetings.
  • The two squads played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in the opening match of the 2021 season. Justin John-Langba scored the go-ahead goal in the 70', but Jackson converted a penalty kick with 2:55 remaining in regulation to knot the contest.
  • The Retrievers earned a 2-0 victory in Annapolis in 2018.
