Newark, Del. – UMBC senior midfielder
Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) continued his torrid stretch with his second consecutive two-effort, two-assist effort, but second half scores by juniors
Alek Wroblewski (Poznan, Poland) and
Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) provided the visiting Retrievers with a 4-2 victory over Delaware (2-8-2) at Grant Stadium.
The two sides each scored back-to-back goals in rapid fire fashion, with the Retrievers (7-4-1) scoring the first two and the final pair to earn their first road victory of the season.
Becher scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season and 20st and 21nd of his career in the first half. He tallied a pair of second half goals in UMBC's 5-1 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday, Oct. 8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Play was even until Calheira was fouled in the Delaware box and Becher stepped up to convert the ensuing penalty kick with a chip to the upper right corner in the 18'.
- Just 65 seconds later, Jordan Travers' long throw-in down the line found Calheira, who penetrated down the left side and entered to a racing Becher, who deposited the ball inside the same right post.
- But the Blue Hens scored off a UMBC defensive miscue with 92 seconds to play in the first half to cut the Retriever lead to 2-1.
- Then, just 30 second into the second half, the Blue Hens carried the momentum forward and tied the game on Alonso Rodriguez' second goal of the night.
- In the 53', UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones made a leaping save to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
- UMBC scored the go-ahead goal in the 61'. Jordan Ehart tapped the ball back to Becher at the midline, who chipped it deep to an sprinting Wroblewski. The transfer got inside his defender and sidestepped the goalie to score with his left foot from five yards out.
- Less than three minutes later, the Retrievers added the insurance tally. Becher's cross from the right sideline found the foot of Calheira, who took two steps to get to the middle of the field and drove a 22-yarder inside the left post.
- Jones made another outstanding save in the 70' and finished with five to earn the victory.
NOTE
- Becher now has nine goals and seven assists on the season, while Calheira has seven goals and five helpers. Becher became the first Retriever since Pete Caringi III (2013) to reach the 20-goal plateau.
The Retrievers face America East newcomer Bryant on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
