Smithfield, R.I. – The UMBC men's soccer team won its second consecutive road contest and third in a row overall as the Retrievers blanked Bryant, 2-0 in ideal autumn conditions.
Junior striker Alek Wroblewski (Poznan, Poland) and senior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) recorded UMBC goals and senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) posted his third shutout of the season in the victory.
UMBC improved to 8-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in America East play.
Becher added the primary assist on Wroblewski's first half goal and now has five goals and five assists in his last three contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Play was even throughout the early stages of the half, but UMBC got on the board in the 27'. Lasse Kelp played a ball into the box, where Calheira won it ten yards from goal and played it back to Becher. The senior midfielder spotted Wroblewski on the left wing and the Mount St. Mary's transfer buried his fourth goal of the season into the upper far quadrant of the net.
· The Retrievers stiffened defensively, not allowing the Bulldogs any high quality second half scoring chances.
· UMBC struck for an insurance goal without warning in the 62'. Junior back Dillon Nesteruk took a short pass from Jones and launched a long pass down the right wing. Becher took a pair of touches and chipped it past the onrushing Bryant keeper and into the far left corner.
NOTES
· Becher became the first Retriever to hit the 10-goal plateau since Pete Caringi III notched 13 in 2013. He is now one career assist shy (18) of entering UMBC's all-time top ten.
· Jones posted his 14th career shutout and moved into sole possession of sixth place on UMBC's all-time list. He needed to make only a pair of saves in the match, as the Retrievers outshot Bryant, 15-7.
The Retrievers play their final non-conference match of the season at Navy (7:00 p.m.) on Wednesday.
