UMBC Men’s Basketball Opens #AEHoops Play Against UMass Lowell on Saturday

UMBC men’s basketball will return after a three-week hiatus to take on UMass Lowell on Saturday night.

BALTIMORE– UMBC men's basketball will return after a three-week hiatus to take on UMass Lowell on Saturday night. The Retrievers last played against UNCG on December 16, falling 62-51 at The Peake. UMBC and UNCG battled but it was a late charge from the Spartans that gave them the win.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • UMBC returns to action after three weeks off to take on the River Hawks The Retrievers are coming off a tough 62-51 loss at home to UNCG on December 16. UMBC and UNCG battled but it was a late charge from the Spartans that gave them the win.
  • Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way with 14 points, the only Retriever in double figures. He is averaging 14.2 ppg and shooting 47.9 percent from the floor and 40.8 percent from three.
  • Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) is the only other Retriever in double figures at 12.0 ppg. He is the team leader with 39 assists, good for 3.5 per game.
  • Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) leads the team on the glass, grabbing 5.3 rpg.

Scouting the River Hawks:
  • The River Hawks come into the contest at 8-6, 0-2 AE on the year after dropping a 77-72 decision against NJIT on Thursday night. NJIT built a seven point advantage at halftime, and held off a late flurry for the win. 
  • Kalil Thomas leads UMass Lowell averaging 11.4 ppg, shooting 49.1 percent from the floor and dishing out 2.3 apg.
  • Everette Hammond and Max Brooks are also scoring in double figures at 10.4 and 10.1 ppg respectively. Brooks is the team leader on the glass, pulling down 6.0 rpg.

All-Time Series:
  • UMBC and UMass Lowell will be meeting for the 17th time in the all-time series with the River Hawks holding a slim 9-7 lead. The River Hawks have won three of the last five dating back to the 2018-19 season. 
  • Last year the two met just once, with UMass Lowell winning 79-77 in the America East Semifinals. 

Milestone Watch:
  • Several Retrievers are approaching career milestones in 2021-22. L.J. Owens is approaching the 1,000 point mark, needing just 195 points to achieve the mark. He is also just 6 games away from 100 career games played.
  • Darnell Rogers needs 56 points to reach 500 career points.
  • Newcomer Ray Salnave needs just 169 points to reach 1,500 career points after scoring 1,266 during his time at Monmouth and DePaul.
