Wojcik Nets Career-High; Men’s Basketball Falls, 86-69, Against Vermont on Saturday Afternoon

UMBC men’s basketball could not overcome a strong start by the Catamounts in an 86-69 loss on Saturday. Vermont started off on a 30-7 run over the first seven minutes to take control early. Szymon Wojcik (Wroclaw, Poland) had a career-high 22 points in the loss.

BALTIMORE– UMBC men's basketball could not overcome a strong start by the Catamounts in an 86-69 loss on Saturday. Vermont started off on a 30-7 run over the first seven minutes to take control early. Szymon Wojcik (Wroclaw, Poland) had a career-high 22 points in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Vermont came out strong, building an early 13-2 lead that forced a Retriever timeout.
  • Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) broke a 13-0 run with a short baseline jumper after the timeout.
  • However the Catamounts would continue their hot shooting half, leading by as many as 23 during the half. 
  • UMBC would find their rhythm late in the half, getting a three and one from L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) late in the half.
  • Szymon Wojick had a strong opening 20 minutes for the Retrievers, putting up 12 points on 5-6 shooting.
  • The Retrievers came out of the locker room in rhythm, getting bucket from Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC).
  • Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) had a big and one at the under 16 timeout off a putback to start a comeback for the Retrievers.
  • UMBC would cut the deficit to as few as 15, thanks to big buckets from Wojcik, but a Vermont run put them back in front by 20.
  • The Retrievers would get the deficit down to 14, but Vermont held off the Retrievers late to defeat UMBC 86-69.

NOTABLE:
  • Wojcik had a career-high 22 points, his first 20 point performance of his career. Wojcik went 8-10 from the floor and 5-7 from the foul line.
  • L.J. Owens added 13 points as the only other Retriever to hit double figures. 
  • UMBC outscored Vermont 33-12 in bench points and shot 48 percent from the floor.

The Retrievers will continue their stretch of three games in five days at Stony Brook on Monday, Jan. 17. Tip-off on Long Island is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN3.
