BALTIMORE –They celebrated the recent past and gave a glimpse of the near future.
To kick things off, the UMBC volleyball team and its fans witnessed the unveiling of the program's America East regular season and championship banners in pre-game ceremonies at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. Then, the Retrievers limited their errors and won their second match of the day, blanking Howard, 3-0, in the Charm City Challenge, presented by Sir Speedy.
UMBC (3-7) opened with a 25-18 first set victory, then pulled out a 26-24 second set triumph, before breezing to a 25-19 third set finale.
As they did versus Quinnipiac, freshman Kira Givans (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Aysia Miller (Miliani, Hawaii) led the offense, recording 14 and 12 kills respectively.
Graduate student Loren Teter (Redondo Beach, Calif.) produced a big first set defensively en route to 28 digs in three sets, while junior setter Andjelija Draskovic (Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia) averaged more than 10 assists per set with 32.
UMBC only committed six service and reception errors in the match, while Howard (2-6) suffered a combined total of 16.
The Retrievers improved to 23-6 in the all-time series with Howard, but the Bison had won three of the last four matches, including the latest encounter, a 3-0 HU sweep in 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first set, UMBC started slowly, but heated up as the set progressed. The score was 13-all, when they Retrievers rattled off four straight points and Howard was unable to rally.
- There were 14 ties as the teams split the first 40 points of the second set. UMBC fended off one set point at 24-23 as the Retrievers scored the final three points of the set. Miller finished the set with back-to-back kills.
- UMBC trailed, 8-7, before three kills by Givans triggered a massive 15-4 run and the Retrievers cruised to their first straight set victory of the season.
STAT CHECK
- UMBC outhit HU, 22.3 to 16.5 percent and recorded 15 more digs (63-48) than the Bison.
- Teter's 28 digs is the eighth-most in a match in school history.
UMBC takes on undefeated Maryland (8-0) in the final match of the weekend on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
