BALTIMORE – The UMBC volleyball program hosted Maryland for the first time in school history and the red-hot Terrapins came away with a 3-0 victory in the final match of the Charm City Classic, presented by Sir Speedy.
Both the Retrievers and Terrapins came into the match after a pair of wins over Howard and Qunnipiac. Maryland (9-0) did not drop a set in the any three matches and prevailed, 25-17, 25-13, 25-13 over the Retrievers.
Eleven Retrievers saw action in the match and UMBC (3-8) was led offensively by freshman Mia Bilusic (Zagreb, Croatia), who recorded nine kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· A kill by Kira Givans (Sacramento, Calif.) cut UMBC's early deficit to 7-6, but the visitors used a 11-3 run to take control of the first set.
· Sophomore Emily Ferketic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started the second set for UMBC and sparked an early 5-0 run with three kills in four points, providing the Retrievers a 7-6 lead. Maryland and UMBC exchanged 5-0 and 3-0 scoring runs, the latter capped by a Bulisic kill, which trimmed UMBC's deficit to 11-10. But a subsequent 7-0 Terp response gave the visitors control of the second set.
· In the third set, UMBC forced an early UM time-out when the hosts surged ahead, 8-4. But an 11-1 Maryland surge spurred their march to victory.
STAT CHECK
· Maryland recorded 15 blocks to UMBC's 5 in the match.
· UMBC junior setter Andjelija Draskovic (Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia) registered 20 assists and 10 digs for the match, while liberos Loren Teter (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Kayla Tomas (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) led the way with a dozen digs apiece.
UMBC heads to West Virginia University for the Mountaineer Classic on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 16 and 17. The Retrievers face Robert Morris in the opener at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
