Men's Soccer Kicks Off '21 Campaign by Hosting Navy on Thursday Evening

GAME PROGRAM

The UMBC men's soccer team opens the 2021 by hosting the Navy Midshipmen on Thurs., Aug. 26 at refurbished Retriever Soccer Park. The opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the America East digital network.

  • The UMBC non-conference schedule features three early contests versus local competition. After the opener versus Navy, the Retrievers head down I-95 to take on pre-season No. 26 Maryland (RV) on Sun., Aug. 29. On Tues., Sept. 14, UMBC hosts Mount St. Mary's, renewing a rivalry for the first time since the Mountaineer program was reinstated in 2018.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr.'s 2020-21 squad featured ten freshmen and all of the eight first-year field players started at least two games. The coaching staff added a pair of graduate transfers and five freshmen to the team, as only three of 26 players have dressed for 25 games or more in the blank-and-gold.
  • UMBC posted a mark of 3-4-1 in the spring 2021 season. The Retrievers had an opportunity to secure one of four America East playoff spots in the season finale, but dropped a tough 1-0 decision at NJIT.
  • Rising senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) produced a brilliant campaign. The three-year starter finished 22nd nationally (tied) in saves per game (4.5), 23rd (tied) in save percentage (81.8) and 51st in goals against average (0.95).
  • Rising sophomore forwards Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) and Spencer Hanks (Odenton, Md./Arundel) led the way with two goals each, while rising junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) added a goal and an assist.
  • Jones (Second Team), Calheira (All-Rookie Team) and fullback Hans Nesheim (All-Rookie Team) all earned America East post-season honors in the spring.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr., enters his 31st campaign at UMBC with a record of 302-190-76. He is ranked 20th amongst active NCAA I coaches with the 302 victories and the most recent mentor to reach the 300-win level (Feb. 23, 2021 vs. GW) and 36th with a winning percentage of 59.9.
  • Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, '97, begins his 25th season, patrolling the sidelines with his former coach, while former Retriever All-American Pete Caringi III, enters his eighth.
  • UMBC is 11-1-3 in its last 15 season opening games. The lone loss occurred in 2019, when the Retrievers dropped a 2-1 decision to Incarnate Word.

Series Record vs. Navy

  • The Mids lead the all-time series, 19-7-4, but UMBC has captured the last two games by identical 2-0 scores in 2017 and 2018. The Retrievers are 4-7-3 in 14 contests versus Navy in Baltimore.
  • Jones recorded his first career victory at Navy on Sept. 8, 2018. He only needed to make one first-half save as UMBC scored a goal per half in the 2-0 triumph in Annapolis.

Mids' Preview

  • Navy posted a 4-2-1 record in 2020-21, which included a 2-1 victory at N.C. State in the fall of 2020. They started out at 3-0-0 in Patriot League spring play, but concluded with a pair of losses and a draw.
  • Sophomore midfielder David Jackson led the Midshipmen with a pair of goals and two assists in his initial campaign in 2020-21.
  • Navy was picked to finish fourth in the 2021 Patriot League preseason poll. Jackson and senior defender Matt Nocita were named to the Patriot League Preseason All-League Team. Additionally, Nocita was recognized as the Patriot League Preseason Defender of the Year.

Up Next

  • The Retrievers make the short journey south on I-95 to take on the Maryland Terrapins on Sun., Aug. 29. The opening kick-off at Ludwig Field is slated for 7:30 p.m.
