NEWARK – UMBC (8-2, 7-2 America East) produced a solid effort on both sides of the field and cruised to a 14-6 victory over host NJIT (1-10, 1-8 AE) in the regular season finale.

With the win, the 18th-ranked Retrievers clinched a share of the 2021 America East Conference regular season title with Vermont (7-4, 7-2) and will host the league championships, beginning on Thursday, May 5 at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers defeated Vermont, 10-8, in the team's lone regular season meeting at UMBC Stadium on April 3.

"First and foremost, I'm just so very appreciative of all the sacrifices that have been made within our athletic department that have allowed our players be able to play and compete at a level that earned us a regular season championship this season," said head coach Ryan Moran. "We look forward to the opportunity to compete in the conference tournament this week."

Senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) set a career-high by saving 18 Highlander shots in all 60 minutes of action. He was the beneficiary of outstanding Retriever defense, which tied a season best with six goals allowed and consistently forced NJIT to shoot from less than advantageous angles.

Junior midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) recorded his second consecutive four-goal game and led a balanced effort with four goals and one assist. Senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) added his fourth consecutive three-goal effort and became the 13th player in school history to record 100 goals (102).

The (share of) regular season title is UMBC's first since 2009 and fifth in the program's 17-year America East history. The Retrievers are the league's defending champions, having won the last tournament played in 2019.

UMBC has won three consecutive games and its seven America East victories sets a new program record.

Galloway and junior attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored in a 35-second span to give UMBC a 2-0 lead just 3:52 into the contest and Frawley hit the century mark in goals at the 5:14 mark. After the Highlanders got on the board at the 12:39 mark, a cutting Frawley converted a Patschorke feed with 52 seconds to play in the period and UMBC led, 4-1, after 15 minutes.

Junior midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's), Patschorke and Galloway added second period goals as the Retrievers outscored the Highlanders, 3-1, to take a 7-2 lead into the locker room.

Galloway scored twice in a 3-1 UMBC surge to open the third quarter, but the host Highlanders put together their lone run of the day, tallying three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 11-6 with 7:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. But sophomore midfielder Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.), who has scored a goal in all ten games this season, potted an unassisted score with 6:41 remaining to open a 3-0 Retriever response over a 3:18 span and put the game out of reach.

Patschorke scored twice and added an assist and became the 36th player in school history to reach the 100-point mark. He reached that plateau in only 34 games, the fifth-fastest to 100 in UMBC annuls.

Graduate student attackman Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Can.) added a goals and Dupuis posted a goal and an assist. McIntyre reached the 50-goal mark (51) in his UMBC career.

Lingner made 11 of his 18 saves in the second and third quarters.

Game times and match-ups for the 2021 America East Men's Lacrosse Championships will be announced later.
