Box Score

Video Highlights

Stony Brook, N.Y. – UMBC senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored his fifth goal of the game with 28 seconds left in overtime as the Retrievers (7-2, 6-2 America East) clinched a spot in the America East playoffs, defeated No. 14/17 Stony Brook, 14-13, at LaValle Stadium.

The win snapped Stony Brook's six-game winning streak and dropped the Seawolves to 8-4, 6-2. In an earlier meeting on March 6, UMBC defeated SBU, 13-12, in quadruple overtime, therefore would win a tie-breaker for seeding in the four-team tournament.

On the game-winning play, sophomore midfielder Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.), who scored the game-winner versus Stony Brook in March, drew two defenders and fed from goal line right to left to Brett McIntyre. (Calgary, Alberta, Can.)  When a SBU defender slid to McIntyre, he fed a wide open Frawley, who scored from the edge of the crease.

"I'm very happy for the program to earn a tough win on the road against an opponent we have a ton of respect for," said Head Coach Ryan Moran. "It's great to see the players' hard work reward them with play extended past the regular season slot of games.

"We certainly weren't perfect, but I do believe we played with toughness and heart and that's what I was most proud of with regards to this team and this game."

UMBC amassed 11 assists on the season high 14 goals scored.

Frawley recorded season highs of five goals and seven total points and now has 11 goals in his last three outings. Junior midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) added a season-best four goals, while McIntyre and linemate Trevor Patshorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added a goal and two assists each.

Senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) matched his season high with 16 saves, recording both versus Stony Brook.

Unlike the first contest, UMBC only trailed twice, at 4-3, after one quarter, and 5-4, early in the second period. Sophomore midfielder Dane Hall (Harwood, Md./St. John's College) and Frawley scored within five seconds of one another late in the second period to break a 6-6 tie and give UMBC an 8-6 halftime lead.

The Retrievers would build a pair of four-goal second half leads, as Frawley tallied his third and fourth of the day early in the third period to provide a 10-6 lead, and Galloway completed his hat trick with 70 seconds to play in the stanza to push the margin to 12-8.

But the explosive Seawolves, who entered the game No. 6 in the nation at 15.3 goals per game, scored four consecutive goals and knotted the game at 12-all at 5:45 mark of the fourth period. Galloway converted from the outside on a nice skip pass from Dupuis to give the visitors a 13-12 lead with 4:48 remaining, but Stony Brook responded 2:14 later to send the game to extra time.

Each team had one shot on goal in the overtime period before Frawley's heroics.

UMBC improved to 3-1 in overtime games this season and have won their seven games this season by a total of 14 goals.

The win was the Retrievers' second over a ranked conference opponent this season, as they defeated then-No. 16 Vermont, 10-8, on April 3.

Frawley, who recorded at least a point for the 34th consecutive game, continues to vault up the UMBC all-time scoring lists. He needs one goal to become the 13th player in school history to score 100 goals and now stands in 20th place on all-time scoring list with 123 points (99-24-123).

Stony Brook outshot UMBC, 49-40, and won 19 of 29 face-offs, but Retriever sophomore face-off specialist Alex Poma (Marietta, Ga.) won four of five draws in the fourth quarter and overtime. UMBC also committed a season-low eight turnovers.

UMBC concludes the regular season at NJIT on Saturday, May 1.
