BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore midfielder Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) scored a man-up goal with 1:09 to play in the fourth overtime period to end the longest game in school history as the Retrievers edged Stony Brook, 13-12.
In the America East opener for both squads, UMBC improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2009, while Stony Brook dropped its second straight and fell to 2-2 overall.
The goal for Dupuis completed his first collegiate three-goal effort and he led the Retrievers with five total points. Graduate student attackman Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Can.) led all goal-scorers with four, while SBU attackman Tom Haun led a balanced Seawolf attack with three goals and one assist.
The goalkeepers were both outstanding, as UMBC senior Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) stopped 16 Stony Brook shots, including one just before the horn of the third overtime period. SBU's Anthony Palma made two dazzling saves in the third overtime frame and finished with 12 stops.
The Retrievers had played a pair of three overtime games in school history and now are 3-0 when games last more than 70 minutes. UMBC defeated Ohio State, 14-13 in 1992 and Maryland, 9-8, in 2008.
The game-deciding goal occurred after Stony Brook was whistled for a personal foul with 1:31 remaining in the fourth overtime. Dupuis took the ball and curled around the right post and tucked a shot just between Palma and the post to set off the second consecutive overtime winning celebration for the hosts.
UMBC defeated Mount St. Mary's, 8-7, one week ago in one extra period.
After trailing for all but four minutes for much of the first three quarters, UMBC built a 12-10 lead on McIntyre's fourth of the game with 10:58 to play. But after a Matt Anderson goal shaved the deficit to 12-11 with 7:11 remaining, the visitors got possession of the ball and drew a pushing penalty with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. Seawolf leading scorer Dylan Pallonetti made a brilliant feed to Cory Vanginhoven inside the attackman scored with 7.7 seconds remaining to second the game to overtime.
The game featured six ties, but only three lead changes. The teams were knotted at 3-3 after 15 minutes, but Stony Brook outscored UMBC, 4-2, in the second quarter to take a 7-5 halftime advantage. SBU scored a man-up goal just ten seconds into the third quarter to grab the game's largest lead, but a 6-1 Retriever run over a span of 15:26 gave the hosts an 11-9 lead early in the fourth quarter.
UMBC junior attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and sophomore midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's) each contributed two goals and one assist apiece.
Pallonetti, Pickel and Anderson each scored twice for the Seawolves.
UMBC held a slight edge, 17-13, in the face-off department and ground balls were knotted at 33-all. Dupuis' game-winning shot gave the victors a 46-45 advantage in shots.
The Retrievers have now won six in a row, dating back to 2020, matching their longest streak since 2009.
UMBC improved to 16-11 in all-time meetings with Stony Brook.
The Retrievers continue America East play next Saturday at Binghamton.
