DAWG BITES
The last time out, the UMBC soccer team fell, 2-1, in overtime to the UAlbany Great Danes on Sunday, March 21.
Christina Corbi scored the lone goal for the Retrievers in the 40th minute off a penalty kick, but the Great Danes scored with six seconds left in the second half to force overtime.
UAlbany later scored the game-winner in the 95th minute for the 2-1 victory.
In the game, senior goalkeeper Jade Wilkins made seven saves in the net; she now has 18 saves on the season and a saves percentage of 78.3.
Corbi and classmate Erin Stevenson each have a goal for the Retrievers, while freshman Meghan McKye has the lone assist on the year. Corbi leads the team with 11 shots, eight of which have been on goal.
GET TO KNOW: NJIT Highlanders
NJIT, who formally joined the America East on July 1, dropped a close 2-1 contest on Thursday evening to the Vermont Catamounts. The Catamounts took the early 2-0 lead in the first half, but the Highlanders netted one late in the second period but their comeback efforts fell short.
NJIT started the season with non-conference wins against Drexel, 3-1, and Wagner, 1-0, before falling to Temple, 1-0. In conference play, the Highlanders pulled a 1-1 draw with Vermont before falling, 5-0, to the defending conference champions Stony Brook.
Lauren Chamberlain and Corbin Reifschneider each lead the Highlanders with two goals, followed by Alexis Ocampo and Nicole Loehle with a goal each.
In goal, Molly Saylor has made 37 saves and posted an 80.4 saves percentage in six appearances for the Highlanders.
Former Retriever standout Mary Hearin joined Ally Nick's staff in 2016 at NJIT. Hearin earned America East second-team All-Conference and All-Rookie honors in 2003 and was named to the all-tournament team in 2005.
INSIDE THE SERIES
While this will be their first matchup as conference opponents, the Retrievers and Highlanders are no strangers to each other on the pitch. This will be the third meeting between the two teams, with the first being back during the 2018 season, where NJIT defeated UMBC, 3-2, in overtime.
Last season, the weather was not on anyone's side as the August 22 season opener was called in the 104th minute as a 0-0 draw. Corbi led the Retrievers with five shots on the night.
