DAWG BITES

UMBC dropped a hard-fought 14-13 battle in overtime on March 20 to the New Hampshire Wildcats at Wildcat Stadium. Sophomore Claire Bockstie led the day with a career-high six goals for the Retrievers.

New Hampshire opened the game on a six-goal streak before sophomore Megan Halczuk scored to set off a five-score run for the Retrievers, including three from Bockstie.

The teams kept things close in the second half before freshman Dymin Gerow tied the game up at 12-12 with 3:40 to play. Seconds later, senior Olivia Docal put UMBC up for the first time, 13-12, but UNH responded to send the game into overtime; UNH would then scored the golden goal in the second overtime.

Bockstie leads the squad with 17 points (16g, 1a), followed by Courtney Renehan (12g, 4a), Halczuk (7g, 4a), and Gerow (10g). Bockstie currently is second in the America East in goals per game (3.20) and sixth in points per game (3.40).

Halczuk is just 10 draw controls away from breaking into the season Top 10, where she would tie Caitlin Miller's 49 draws set back during the 2016 season. The current record for draws in a season is 87 set back in 2018 by Miller. She currently is first in the America East in draw controls per game with 7.80.

In goal, Lexi Roberts has made 49 saves and has a 46.2 saves percentage. The senior ranks second in the conference in saves percentage, second in saves per game (9.80), and second in ground balls per game (3.80).

About the Opponent: Binghamton Bearcats

Binghamton's 2021 campaign started off with an 11-8 victory over UMass Lowell on March 6, but the Bearcats have since lost their last two games.

On March 20, the Bearcats fell, 17-10, the Vermont Catamounts. The game was tied at 6-6 with 11 minutes to play in the first half before Vermont went on a seven-goal tear to take a 13-6 advantage.

Prior to that, Binghamton dropped a 19-13 contest with the UAlbany Great Danes. The two teams kept things close early on before the Great Danes broke open a seven-goal lead early into the second half.

Paige Volkmann, who leads the Bearcats in goals (10) and points (11) also leads the America East in goals per game (3.33) - just one spot above Claire Bockstie (3.20).

Goalkeeper Taylor Passuello returned for her final year with the Bearcats, making 26 saves and registering a 41.9 saves percentage on the young season. The graduate student ranks fifth in saves per game (8.67) in the America East and third in ground balls per game (3.67).

PADDING THE STAT SHEETS

Multiple Retrievers are in the Top 10 in the America East in multiple stat categories, but also find themselves among the ranks in the NCAA.

Megan Halczuk, who ranks first in the America East in draw controls per game at 7.80 is eighth in the nation in the same category. As a team, the Retrievers are 12th in the nation in draw controls per game and first in the America East with 15.80.

Lexi Roberts is eighth in the NCAA in ground balls per game (3.80) and 21st in saves per game (9.80).

Courtney Renahan, who is 6-8 from the eight-meter this season, is 17th in the nation in free-position percentage and 19th in FPS goals per game with 1.20; Olivia Docal, who is 4-7 from the mark, is 26th with 1.00.

THE SERIES

This is the 17th time UMBC and Binghamton will meet, with the Retrievers holding a 14-2 advantage and a 4-1 record in the last five contests.

The last time the Retrievers and Bearcats met was back April 3, 2019. Binghamton led, 9-7, with three and a half minutes to play but Catherine Sims scored the final two goals of regulation to send things to overtime. Just 1:31 into the OT period, Julia Hatmaker took a feed from Payton Van Kirk for the golden goal.
