DAWG BITES
UMBC starts its 2021 spring season after finishing the 2019 season with a 2-13-1 record overall and a 1-7 mark in America East play.
UMBC's lone conference win came against Maine on October 20, where Laura Ventura and Christina Corbi scored within 47 seconds of each other to tie the game at 1-1 and ultimately take a 2-1 lead.
Corbi returns to the Retriever offense after leading the team in 2019 with 10 points, along with Kara Poole who was named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2019. In goal, Jade Wilkins returns for her senior season after posting a 2.25 goals-against average and a 74.8 saves percentage.
GET TO KNOW: Towson Tigers
Towson ended its 2020 last year with a 4-13-0 overall record and a 1-8-0 mark in the CAA. The Tigers picked up their lone conference win in the season finale against the College of Charleston, 2-1, on October 27.
The Tigers have 11 returners from a season ago including top-scorer Jenna Blank, who led the Tigers with 12 points off five goals and two assists, and 2019 All-Rookie selection Jacey Miller.
Like their women's lacrosse team, women's soccer will compete in the North Division of the CAA this season against Hofstra, Drexel, Delaware, and Northeastern.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The series between UMBC and Towson turns 18 this year, with the Tigers holding a 10-7-1 lead over the Retrievers.
Last season in Towson, the Tigers scored in the 12th minute for the early 1-0 lead. The Retrievers had good looks throughout the game but Towson's goalkeeper was able to keep them out of the net. Danielle Fuentes nearly tied the game up as time expired with a shot that ricocheted off the left post and almost into the back of the net.
