Women's Lacrosse Returns to UMBC Stadium to Face VCU on Saturday

BALTIMORE - The last game played at UMBC Stadium for the UMBC women's lacrosse team was on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, when they defeated Bucknell, 13-9. Tomorrow, they will return to the turf to take on the VCU Rams at 3 p.m. for the first home contest of the 2021 season.

DAWG BITES

In their season opener on February 19, the Retrievers fell to the Towson Tigers, 12-5. The Retrievers held the Tigers close through the first few seconds of the second half, but Towson opened up a 6-0 run late into the half to seal their win.

Lily Kennedy led the charge with two goals on the day, with Courtney Renehan, Katie Schluederberg, and Claire Bockstie all adding another.

The Retrievers won 13 draw controls on the day, with Megan Halczuk bringing down a career-high nine. In goal, Lexi Roberts made 12 stops.

 

About the Opponent: VCU Rams

For the first time in program history, VCU is off to a 3-0 start after defeating Radford, 19-8, on February 24. The Rams and Highlanders were tied, 5-5, with 24:10 to play in the second half before VCU's Kelsey McDonnell kickstarted a 13-1 run for the Rams. 

Juliana George tied a program record with 10 points (4g, 6a), including five assists during the second-half run.

Keriann McTavish, who returns to VCU's offense for her final season after having her senior year shortened due to COVID, led the team with seven goals.

VCU's other wins on the season include an 11-7 victory against Old Dominion in its season opener on February 12 and a 20-8 defeat of Longwood on February 17.

Former UMBC standout Jen (Kasper) O'Brien enters her sixth season as the head coach of the Rams. O'Brien graduated from UMBC in 2007 and was a standout attacker, finishing her career with 142 points (86g, 52a).

 

THE SERIES

This will be the fifth straight year that UMBC and VCU meet, with the Retrievers winning every contest against the Rams.

In 2020, the two teams played close with UMBC only holding a 3-1 lead at halftime. VCU took a 4-3 lead out of halftime, but the Retrievers used an 8-1 run to
