BALTIMORE – UMBC graduate student guard
Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) knocked down six treys, including four in the fourth quarter, but a Retriever rally came up just short in a 62-55 setback to visiting Lafayette.
UMBC cut an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to 58-55 on graduate student forward
Janee'a Summers' (Bound Brook, N.J.) trey with 1:44 remaining. But Lafayette (4-5) broke right back down the court and scored on a layup ten seconds later and added two free throws with 40 seconds left for the final margin of victory.
Marquez scored 18 points, two shy of her career high, and the six treys tied her career best, recorded for San Jose State versus Eastern Washington in November of 2019. She buried 6-of-8 shots from behind the arc.
Summers added 17 points and moved past three players and into 18th place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,049 points. She added four steals in the contest. Graduate student post
Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) contributed 10 points for the Retrievers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Esadah scored eight first quarter points, but Lafayette led, 16-15, after 10 minutes.
- Marquez' first trey of the game gave the Retrievers a game-high 25-20 lead with 6:05 remaining in the second quarter. But the Leopards outscored UMBC, 7-2, down the stretch and the teams went to the break knotted at 27-all.
- Lafayette took control by opening the third quarter with 16-5 run and took a 43-32 lead with 2:46 to play in the period. Summers scored the final four points of the third and UMBC crawled to within 43-36 after 30 minutes.
- Marquez drained his first four attempts from behind the arc in the quarter, the final one to bring UMBC to within, 56-52, with 3:06 remaining. The Retrievers forced a missed shot, but Summers' jumper on the ensuing possession rimmed out. Lafayette scored on a put-back before Summers struck from long distance, but the Retrievers would never have the ball in a one possession game down the stretch.
NOTE
- The six treys by Marquez is the most by a Retriever since Dominika Skrocka made six at Maryland in December of 2018.
UMBC (1-7) plays next at Howard on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
