Summers Scores Career-High 25, but Women's Basketball Falls at Howard

Washington, D.C. – Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) scored a career-high 25, but host Howard used a 14-2 third quarter run to break-open a tight game en route to a 74-61 win on Tuesday night.

How it happened:
  • Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) made her first career start and drained a three, but that would be the last lead UMBC (1-8) would have in the quarter.
  • Howard (5-5) took a 16-15 lead into the second quarter, but a pair of Summers free throws nine seconds into the quarter gave the Retrievers a 17-16 lead.
  • Summers would then hit a three to give UMBC a game-best four point lead, but the Lady Bison responded with a 7-0 run.
  • Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) hit a layup just before the halftime buzzer to cut the Howard lead to 36-35 at the half
  • Esadah then made a layup seconds into the third quarter to give UMBC a 37-36 lead, but that's when the hosts responded with a 14-2 run to take the lead for good.
  • Alexia Nelson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a layup to cut the deficit to 50-43, but the hosts again would respond with an 8-3 run to head into the final frame up 58-46.
  • The Retrievers would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way

Esadah finished with 13 points and three rebounds, while Summers tied her season-high with eight rebounds.Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.) added 10 points and four rebounds

UMBC heads to Syracuse for a Saturday morning matchup. Tip-off is slated for 11 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
