St. Francis Brooklyn Pulls Away Late to Edge Women's Basketball

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team had a chance to cut nine point deficit down to one possession mid-way through the fourth, but the rally fell short as visiting St. Francis Brooklyn (3-4) pulled away late for a 63-51 victory on Sunday afternoon at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) paced the UMBC offense with 11 points, while Alexia Nelson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a season-best 10 points in the effort. Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) had the best game of her young career, setting personal bests in points (six), rebounds (five) and steals (two)

How it Happened
  • The Terriers scored the first four points of the game, but UMBC (1-6) battled back to tie the game on an Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) layup
  • St. Francis Brooklyn responded with a 9-0 run that Dixon ended with a jumper, and the guests took a 13-6 lead into the second
  • Drake and Dixon hit back-to-back shots to cut the SFBK lead to 15-14 with 5:10 left in the half, but the guests immediately hit a three six seconds later to push the lead back to four
  • A layup with three seconds left for the Terriers capped a 12-4 run to end the second a put them up 27-18 at the half
  • After SFBK extended the lead to 11, Drake made a steal and a fast break layup to cut the deficit to 33-24 just three minutes into the third
  • Fellow freshman Antonia May (Amsterdam, N.Y.) drained a three a few minutes later to trim the Terrier lead to 33-29
  • The guests would again stretch the lead back to nine at 40-31, Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.) hit a jumper to again make it a four point game late, but UMBC eventually trailed 41-36 after three
  • The Retrievers had multiple possessions to get close with the score at 43-39, but couldn't convert as SFBK hit a three with just under seven minutes left
  • UMBC eventually had the ball down 46-41 with just over five minutes left, but again couldn't score and the guests followed with another three.
  • That three was the beginning of an 8-0 run to pull away late for the Terriers as the came out victorious, 63-51

The Retrievers play their final non-conference home game of the season on Thursday, December 9, when they host Lafayette. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
