Retriever Men’s Basketball Ends Road Swing at Princeton on Monday

UMBC men’s basketball will play the last of a three-game road trip against Princeton on Monday night.

BALTIMORE– UMBC men's basketball will play the last of a three-game road trip against Princeton on Monday night. The Retrievers are 5-4 on the year and 0-2 on the road swing, having most recently lost to Georgetown 100-71 on Wednesday. L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) led the team with 17 points on a career-best five three pointers.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • The Retrievers enter the Monday night matchup at 5-4 on the year after dropping a 100-71 decision to Georgetown on Wednesday night in D.C. UMBC rallied back from an early deficit to take a first half lead, but a hot shooting Hoya side used a big second half to defeat the Retrievers.
  • Owens had a career-high five three pointers, scoring 17 points in the loss. Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) added 11 points in the loss.
  • Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) leads the Retrievers averaging 14.3 ppg. He is shooting 49.5 percent from the floor and 43.6 percent from three.
  • Rogers is the only other Retriever in double figures at 12.8 ppg, dishing out 4.0 apg. Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) leads the team on the glass averaging 5.2 rpg.
Scouting the Tigers:
  • Princeton comes into the contest at 8-3 on the year, having won their last three games including an 84-73 win against Lafayette on Saturday. The Tigers are a perfect 5-0 at home this year.
  • Four different Tigers are averaging double figures on the year, led by Jaelin Llewellyn at 15.6 ppg. Ethan Wright is just behind him at 14.3 ppg and a team best 7.7 rpg. 
  • Tosan Evbuomwan and Ryan Langborg are scoring at a 13.5 and 12.5 ppg clip respectively, with Evbuomwan averaging 5.3 apg.
All-Time Series:
  • The Retrievers and Tigers have met three times previously with Princeton winning all three. 
  • The last time the two met was in 2003 in Baltimore where the Tigers won 68-56.
  • UMBC will be facing their second Ivy League opponent this season, having defeated Columbia, 98-60 just 11 days ago.
Milestone Watch:
  • Several Retrievers are approaching career milestones in 2021-22. L.J. Owens is approaching the 1,000 point mark, needing just 218 points to achieve the mark. He is also just 8 games away from 100 career games played.
  • Darnell Rogers needs 73 points to reach 500 career points.
  • Newcomer Ray Salnave needs just 173 points to reach 1,500 career points after scoring 1,266 during his time at Monmouth and DePaul.
